Virginia's Elections a Huge Victory for Gun Violence Prevention, Say Activists

Activists for Common-Sense Gun Laws are celebrating an election-night victory in Virginia, the first election in the state since the tragic shootings at Newton, Connecticut.  They see Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe's win as a "huge victory for gun violence prevention" because McAuliffe campaigned on gun issues, voicing his support for a better background check system.

Post-Zimmerman Verdict: Soul Searching about Gun Violence, Compassion, and Understanding

After a 6-person jury acquitted George Zimmerman of all charges related to the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the President asked the nation on Sunday to honor Trayvon by asking ourselves if "we're doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities," as well as whether "we're doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence" and prevent future tragedies such as this.

Gun Control Advocates Regroup Following Failure of Background Check Bill

After the Senate failed to secure the 60 votes needed to pass the Manchin-Toomey Amendment, which would have expanded background checks to include sales of guns over the internet and at gun shows, groups that have advocated for tighter restrictions on the sales of guns and ammunition are regrouping and planning their next phase of activism. Gabrielle Giffords, through her organization Americans for Responsible Solutions, had this to say to supporters: "Over two years ago, when I was shot point-blank in the head, the U.S. Senate chose to do nothing. Four months ago, 20 first-graders lost their lives in a brutal attack on their school, and the U.S. Senate chose to do nothing."

UN Approves First Ever Global Arms Trade Treaty

After more than two weeks of intense negotiations at the UN, a global Arms Trade treaty was adopted by the General Assembly with an overwhelming majority of 154 to 3.  When the treaty enters into force, arms transfers will become illegal if it there is good reason to believe that the weapons will be used for genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes.
Some opponents said the treaty could impact legal arms transfers, but US Secretary of State John Kerry noted that the treaty protects “the sovereign right of states to conduct legitimate arms trade” and each state’s right to regulate arms within its own borders.

Rally to Mark One Year Anniversary of Aurora, CO Shootings

This Friday, the organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns will hold a rally and vigil in Aurora, CO to rememberi the victims of the July 20th,  2012 shooting that killed 12 people and injured 58.  They will demand action from legislators to reform gun laws.
