Activists Ask Obama to Refuse to Sign "Monsanto Protection Act"

Organizations that seek to limit the spread of Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) such as Food Democracy Now and the Alliance for Natural Health are reporting that Congress has just passed the so-called Farmer Assurance Provision (Section 735) of H.R. 933—that will take away the authority of federal courts to stop the sale and planting of untested genetically engineered crops while the US Department of Agriculture performs an environmental impact statement, making  judges’ prior rulings about these foods "irrelevant."  This effectively "strips judges of their constitutional mandate to protect consumer and farmer rights and the environment."  Since Monsanto Corporation is one of the main producers of Genetically Modified foods, Food Democracy Now calls the provision the "Monsanto Protection Act."  Monsanto is the company that has created such controversial products as DDT, PCBs, and Agent Orange.

The Alliance for Natural Health says that it was "thrown under a bus" by this move, and that no Senator is willing to take responsibility for including the amendment, indicating that this development is an example of the power that lobbyists for a big company– Monsanto in this case– have to maniptulate the legislative process in their favor:

It’s not just that the biotech industry was extraordinarily sneaky to include the rider in this “must pass” funding legislation—the CR is a stopgap bill to avert a government shutdown next week and keep agencies operating through September 30, and this includes funding for the Pentagon. It also shows how much power the industry has— Congress is clearly dancing to their tune to allow the CR to be used this way."

Food Justice is asking people to contact Congress '"and tell them you are outraged,"  with the goal of  to shutting down their phone lines until Section 735 is removed from the CR before the President signs. The Alliance for Natural Health is asking people to contact their Representatives as well.

Here is Part 1 of the the ARTE documentary "The World According to Monsanto" reveals some of the unsavory details about Monsanto and about the impact of Monsanto's GMO products:
