Is Renewable Energy Inevitable? Absolutely, says Tesla CEO Elon Musk

The serial entrepreneur and celebrated "big thinker" says it is easier to meet America's electricity needs with renewable energy than most might think.

In a new YouTube video, Elon Musk, PayPal co-founder,  CEO & CTO of SpaceX,  and CEO & Chief Product Architect of Tesla Motors, says that “by definition, we must move to renewable energy.”  The alternative, he explains, is that the world simply runs out of energy and civilization collapses.

“The question,” he asks, “is how fast should we move? What pace should we go at?” His answer: “We should go as fast as we can,” adding, “We should get there before we do the environmental damage and not after.”

Of all options for renewable energy, Musk points to solar as by far the most abundant. He notes that the globe, without solar energy, “would be a frozen ice ball at about four degrees above absolute zero.”

To implement enough solar technology to meet America’s electricity needs would, according to Musk, require only a 100 mile by 100 mile grid, namely, approximately “a corner of Arizona.”

In the video, Musk goes on to discuss the potential, also, for battery power to be unlimited given the large amount of metals to be found in the earth’s crust.
